It almost takes on a different meaning, that of exchange, in the current era of returned merchandise. We then simply order the size or item “in exchange,” as it relates to our desire. We also act as exchange students through various means. More serious is the exchange negotiations for prisoners of war.
Before our time, and even the time before Jesus, God revealed this as documented evidence. “Yet it was our weaknesses He carried; it was our sorrows that weighed Him down. And we thought His troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for His own sins! But He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed;” words of exchange. Jesus would follow through in His time, saying, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep;” an exchange, that we might have a new kind of life and spirit now, and through eternity.
Father, it was Your plan for us to be in right-standing, righteous in Your presence, but our rebellion, sin, prohibited this relationship. Thank You for life as planned by You, even the disciplines and trials that draw our return, trusting You through the gifted exchange of Jesus, Your Son, and our Lord of lords.
