Many times you have become whelmed, perhaps unknowingly. Other times there are when you have realized you were in a state of being over-whelmed, not understanding that being whelmed is already being submerged; and overwhelming being submerged-submerged, double submerged, engulfed, even buried!
Even in the midst of a miracle, we can still be over-whelmed. Take the example of a fisherman, one used to being around and in the water. He grew up with water and its storms, which is to say, it was a common experience for him to be in both the calm and the rage of the sea. Later, as an understudy to Jesus, he and the entire group, as was recorded, “had all seen Him (walking on the lake) and were terrified (overwhelmed). However, He spoke to them. “Courage,” He said, “it is I. Stop being afraid!”
“Then Peter called to Him, already whelmed, “Lord, if it is really you, tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come!” He said. So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he became afraid; and as he began to sink.” Overwhelmed, he yelled, “Lord! Save me!” Jesus immediately stretched out His hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “Such little trust! Why did you doubt?””
Father, thank You for reaching “down” unto us, by Your Spirit, giving us Your peace, even as Jesus promised; a peace that allows us to trust You, causing us to “lie down in grassy pastures, as You lead us by quiet water, restoring our inner being,” even taking away our being overwhelmed.
“Sing for joy to God our strength! Start the music! Beat the drum! Play the sweet lyre and the lute!” Trust Him for His promises, protection, and provisions, even from being overwhelmed! As God Himself has exclaimed, “I lifted the load from his shoulder; his hands were freed from the [laborer’s] basket. I am Adonai your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth, and I will fill it.” Trust Him to do so, unto life, abundant and eternal.
