Introduction:  Based on the Gentile Pentecost witnessed in Chapter. 10, Peter shows that God’s saving heart is toward all peoples, not exclusively to Jews. We see in today’s text, 5 powerful qualities that a Christ centered church takes on, in order to be a powerful mission tool in God’s hand.

I.          Christ centered churches evangelize rather than fossilize.    vss. 19-21

Believers are “telling the message” Jew & gentile diversity; unity in Christ

This is our litmus test:  does FBC’s light shine, reflecting the living Christ?

II.         Christ centered churches build up faithful followers.    vss. 22-24   

Notable is Barnabas’ character - 4:36  a son of encouragement, acted as a catalyzer to Jerus. church, moving from just Jewish mission--to all peoples

He’s “good man” v.24,  full H.S., and full of faith 

His believing life strongly encouraged the fledgling Antioch church

III.        Christ centered churches keep thirsty for Word - Truth   vss. 25-26

A notable thirst for understanding & knowledge of truth that comes       from the “gospel hold” on a believer--mind is opened up to discovery, “Thinking God’s thoughts after Him” 16^{th cent}  astron.  Johann Kepler

Colossians 1:15-18   sanctified imagination that hungers for His truth

IV.        Christ centered churches are recognized by likeness to Him    vs. 26 First time believers are called “Christian” -- lit. belonging to Christ

Significance is that it’s others who began this name--it’s what they saw in    these followers/believers, that the title was given to them. The unmistak- able quality: people who have been elected, drawn, given faith, are loved

V.  Christ centered churches are aware of needs and they give. vss. 27-30

Quality of all in a church-  to care and to alleviate want, need in others

Psalm 37:18-21  the righteous ones give

Application:  - Rejoice always--espec. when God is evident in others…

Christians must bear a resemblance to their Savior   -  Romans  12:1-2

Only two kinds of people: 1. Natural person   

2. Christian person   John 3:36
